Why does nobody inform us that we are literally going to FADE?
I propose a menopause movie that explains this shit the same way that "girls only" film in fifth grade explained periods (Wasn't there a happy animated sperm swimming up a Fallopian tube? Only to find some other sperm had beat him to the egg?) This film would talk about lube and blusher and HRT. Who's in?
It’s a suppository. It’s pretty expensive but there are discounts around if you look. I get mine online from IsraelPharm and it’s about 1/4 of the US price. My insurance doesn’t cover it because of course not.
I like Jones Road too and am especially fond of the lip and cheek tint. One fat stick that goes on, well, lips and cheeks. Great for travel or to stick in your pocket on a night out. I use Tawny Nude but also have a fun pink one for summer.
What a weird coincidence, too - I almost just bought her memoir for my cousin for Christmas (the only reason I didn't was because I thought he might have already read it). She taught at our college in Rhode Island! It's on my list. And I was excited to see she's a knitter, so I just subscribed to her substack :)
Ooo, I'm going to give that mascara a try! (the love is fading between me and MAC Superstack).
I'm kind of a makeup addict. When I wear foundation, it's Estee Lauder Double Wear—it's been a staple for 30 years. Amazing stuff. It doesn't puddle in fine lines or wrinkles, and helps blur the several acne scars I have leftover from adolescence (thanks, aging and collagen loss, for making those look more prominent now, ugh).
On non foundation days, I use Skinceuticals SPF 50 tinted and brush Laura Geller's Baked powder over it for a natural look. Blush is tough for me—I've never really been able to figure out where to place it—but Nars Orgasm works great with my coloring, so I'll often just tap on a bit on my apples.
I wear MAC lipsticks exclusively. The formulas and colors are unmatched IMHO, and they have a slew of the kind of soft pinky neutrals that work best with my skin tone. Velvet Teddy is my go to, as is Faby, a great shimmery pink. For gloss, I used to wear Clinique exclusively, but they got rid of the pink I wore for decades, so I bounce around. Right now I'm wearing Milk's Odyssey line in Wander.
MAC discontinued one of the two lipsticks I've used for years and YEARS. Fortunately they have so many shades I found a good substitute, but it was a sad day
I went back to Double Wear a few years ago. It's heavy duty, yet still doesn't stop my shine (still oily and breaking out at 60!). I can't think of anything stronger, but not sure I want to.
It's crazy to still break out at this age, isn't it? I was talking with my doc about it and apparently the trend now is for dermatologists to put people who are still super oily with occasional breakouts on a "maintenance" dose of isotretinoin of around 30 or 40 mg once per week. Says there are benefits for aging skin as well.
I love the fact that you have posted (and talked about) lots of these before - and they aren't the latest freebies that you are obligated to pitch to us.
My go-to's are the L'Oreal True Match tinted serum foundation (I was into the JR What the Foundation for a while, but it's so shiny and takes some work to blend out), Iris & Romeo lip and cheek tint for blush with a little Miracle Balm for highlighter, tubing mascara (I loved No 7 but it looks like it might be discontinued as of late), and RMS serum lipstick. I also bought a Victoria Beckham eye pencil during her Black Friday sale and I have to say, it is all that. Goes on way easier than any other pencil I have tried and smudges out quite nicely. I'm also loving the Kroger dupe of Supergoop's Glowscreen - very similar (maybe even more hydrating), and I am inclined to use more of it at a time since it's cheap.
You are such a knockout Kim. Love that pic of you! I could talk makeup all day but first I'm going to comment on your EIF podcast...because I'm not on Facebook and I don't know where else to do it:
I have always loved the podcast but the recent episodes have been SO good--hilarious, cathartic, and helpful too. I enjoy all the guests but also love when it is just the two of you. Thank you so much for the great listening content.
And two specifics to the weeks episode:
1. They HAVE made a movie about erasing negative memories. It's called "Inside Out" and it's wonderful and moving.
2. The Babaa sweaters are, I believe, popular because they are natural fiber sweaters. They are well made of good quality yarn. This is absurdly hard to find these days. Absolutely agree that the cut does my figure no favors but I suggest that this is also the appeal. They are supremely cozy and warm and architectural and not really "fashion.
I’m all about the tinted sunscreen, too, but I use Elta MD: a dermatologist introduced me to it after an in-office procedure to zap some spider veins that annoyed me. It’s got niacinamide in it, too, so it’s a 3 for 1 product. Foundation, even creamy, lower-coverage ones, just look cakey and aging now. Any spot needing more coverage gets a little Tarte Shape Tape (ultra creamy formula). A cream blush and some mascara and we’re done.
Many years ago I went all in for Ellis Faas makup after getting done up at Bigelow in NYC. The only product of the line that remained in my routine until it ran out was the mascara. It's pricey but I recently went for it again because I like it so much. The wand is quite long, which for some reason makes me feel like I have more control. I can see my lashes when I use it. I think it comes in only one color - black. I also like the Jones Road gel eyeliner. No tugging! It came in a kit a couple of months ago but I'm told that JR will sell it individually next year. As for foundation, I like Ariane Poole face tint with spf though I may switch to the Kosas b/c it is likely more readily available here (Poole's is from the UK and I justify it by only getting it during a promo). I also like her eyeshadow (can't think of what she calls it but it goes on with a "rabbits foot" and gives just a wash of color.
So, I get lash extensions now….every two weeks I relax for an hour while lashes are applied. I now never wear mascara or any eye makeup, because it’s amazing what a difference lush eyelashes make ( I get the most basic, least dramatic lashes). Maybelline’s cheap red eyebrow pencil is the best in the business. Giorgio Armani foundation and then I just got the Hourglass palette with blush and that gorgeous luminizing powder. Makeup takes 5 minutes.
I wear my makeup differently now. With grey hair and fair skin I need a little extra definition around the eyes so I use a Laura Mercier caviar stick in amethyst close to my lashline and then buffed out a bit, and then mascara of choice. Either L’Oréal Voluminous, CG Lash Blast, or Ilia. Always a bit of blush, some benefit eyebrow wax to keep things organized, maybe under eye brightening concealer if really needed and either black honey or an RMS lip light and that’s my day to day. I love makeup and putting it on never fails to lift my spirits.
I use Kosas foundation, Jones Road miracle balms (several colors depending on look I want), Jones road brow pencil, Lash Paradise by L’Oréal (super good cheap mascara), and I’m a lipstick junkie-I must have at least 100 including the most expensive but I’ve come to the conclusion that MAC has the best lipsticks-most comfortable and the best colors and a decent price.
I’ve been curious about Jones Road but was totally turned off by my experience in their store in the Village. No shoppers except for my friend and me and three sales associates who couldn’t be bothered to get off their phones to help us.
I was at their store in Montclair and DID get help, but she seemed so put out by having to assist me. I bought a couple of things but didn’t love them. The foundation she applied in the store felt thick and heavy and I felt like I’d fallen for Instagram marketing.
I guess this would be characterized as my high/low routine.
I use Nature Bisse Diamond Cocoon Sheer-$$ but one jar lasts me a looong time, sparingly around my nose and mouth, one in while under my eyes. Then I use, also sparingly, L'oreal Lumi Glotion in medium on my cheeks and forehead. A little powder on my nose to ensure the glow is cheek focused.
No blush? I use merit which is swipe and done(the hype for the jones road miracle balm isn’t having staying power with me. Bobbie brown eye pencil since no sharpener. I also use the lighter Kosas dreambeam myself

Sign me up. I'd like to discuss the horror that happens to one's hair during menopause.
Yeah, and could someone tell me where my orgasm went?
Omg I love this little community so much .
Ugh that too.
Bobby, DHEA (Intrarosa) can help with that! It brought mine back!
Thank you! I will ask my Dr. I'm seeing them next week. Is it in a pill or cream form?

*The* Ann Hood reads GOACA! Amazing!

Who else kinda wishes that Kim puts together a gift basket of all these things so I can try them together....I'd pay a premium......

I have had this happen with several products over the years and it's maddening!

Thank you! My brother Todd, who is a very talented photographer, took it.
It’s my favorite picture of you. Can I have Todd’s info please?

No blush? I dig the Jones Road Miracle Balm in Miami Beach or Dusty Rose and adore the liquid blushes from Saie.

I don't really use blush because my skin tends to get red. When I do use it, I use Miracle Balm.
Me too. I have just enough red to look like blush when I wear other makeup.
