Fuck the barrel pants! I have no desire to look like Pecos Bill.

Nice to see last minute packing that works! That Isobel dress looks amazing! Re the barrel pants - I was so against them, and then got a pair of very slight barrel poplin pants from Buck Mason and loved them. They are my favorite summer pants now. Then...I got a pair of the Ruti On the Loose pants, and they are sort of barrel too, and I also find them insanely flattering. I still don't like the look of barrel jeans but these two work well for me.

I was also vehemently against barrel pants… until I tried on a great pair from Everlane. They fit me perfectly and they’re flattering as hell. I was truly shocked by how much I love them.

Flowing fabric barrels are way more flattering—jeans are just so weird. I own a pair of the Ruti Wide-ish pants, which are pretty similar to the On the Loose and I wear them quite a bit. Great for travel, because they pair well with just about everything, from sneakers to heels, sweatshirts to going out tops. Wash in the sink and they dry overnight.

I love all of these and, yes, I am not liking barrel pants and appreciate the direction to Ruti pants.

Although this is not the topic today, I believe it is somewhat related. I would like to ask this group of wise and wonderful women about your thoughts on GLP1/Semaglutide medications for weight loss? I have gained almost 40 lbs of post-menopausal weight and regularly lose 20lbs dieting and then gain back 25. It is miserable. My old clothes won’t fit and I am hesitant to invest in quality pieces because I plan to lose weight. I wake up everyday with a ‘battle plan’ that I often lose and it is really detrimental to my well-being. Any thoughts/experiences you feel comfortable sharing would be greatly appreciated!

I have been hearing a lot about micro-dosing GLP1 for exactly what you describe, and which I think many of us girls of a certain age experience: steady rises in weight related to menopause/post menopause that no longer respond to traditional diet/exercise. It's incredibly frustrating, and this has the potential to be game changing, with the caveat that the "treatment" is likely for life. And we just don't know the long term effects of doing that yet.

Beware- Had good luck on Mounjaro ( I have metabolic syndrome but not diabetes) , healthcare stopped covering it and weight came back with a vengeance. I am fairly fit and eat well. Wish I never tried it but it is great, you just will be on for life I believe. At $700 a month I chose to stay off and do good old fashioned diet and exercise. Sorta working but takes work. What I miss most is the loss of cravings, they call it "food noise" and it truly removed my sweet tooth and appetite control was fantastic.

I haven’t tried it myself but I know several people who have (and continue to take it) and had good experiences and one person who couldn’t tolerate it and had to stop.

I started following Beth Feraco on Instagram (@bethferacofitness) six months ago. She is a no-BS fitness and nutrition coach who's 52 years old and just very practical. I've slowly lost 15 lbs. by cutting back on calories and learning to not eat all day out of boredom. It's an adjustment. The boring basics work, but it's a lifestyle change you're either willing to make or you're not. Beth Feraco is funny as well -- she offends some people, but she talks like I talk with my closest friends. Check her out!

Thank you, I'll take all the help I can get. It was lovely being thinner and I invested in some great clothes that now sit there . Best wishes on your quest.

Ive been taking zepbound for a year and have lost 42 lbs. and its been life changing. And side effects have been minimal. However, and I’m not a doctor, and but most of the negative side effects and press (ozempic face?) have come from people who were just a bit overweight or have lost weight too fast.. These are serious medications and unless you are very obese and/or diabetic i wouldn’t take them. I’d like to lose 38 more and even then I wouldn’t be at my “ideal weight.” My PCP is an obesity specialist who carefully monitors my progress etc, my bloodwork etc. This isnt a quick fix and not weightwatchers. On the other hand if you’ve considered bariatric surgery or have dangerous numbers I would definitely speak to a doctor about it.

I ditto maryse - it sounds like these things work because they fool your brain into thinking you're full (when you aren't? Or are you? idk.) I worry that there could be potential bone loss along with apparently? some risk of muscle loss. (I admit, I tend to be a worrier.)

It bothers me that these things are sold to people when we don't know if they are safe.

So, if you aren't in medical danger from being large - and that is a live debate among doctors now too - then I wouldn't.

Almost alllll of the debate that I see about size and positivity and all that cr*p seems to me to focus exclusively on "weight." But I don't want to lose "weight." I'd *like* to lose some of my flabbbbb ... oh yeah, and that brings up, is my flab "visceral" or not? I have no idea!! I do not have very good insurance right now. I am flying a bit blind.

Women's health has never been a real priority, I think. And it isn't now, is it? (No. We know it isn't, per Dobbs.) I sympathize and I am in the same boat really, but I vote "not yet."

Visceral fat is what surrounds your organs. It’s inside of you and subcutaneous is what you can grab under your skin. And that’s why 2 people with the same body fat % and weight can have have totally different health risks.

Regarding bone loss/muscle loss. That’s why you are encouraged to eat a lot of protein and lift weights. But also if you have a lot of fat to lose, you’ll lose fat. As for how it works, it’s definitely a brain thing. In fact the brain and GI tract are closely linked (science nerd). I definitely get hungry but it doesn’t take an entire bag of chips to fill the void. IYKYK. It’s not about being weak or having less willpower.

If someone can be closely supervised medically, as you are, then it is probably much safer.

I probably have both kinds of flab! Plus maybe additional ones too. Undiscovered flab. Dark matter flab. Ghost flab. "Other" ... I just don't want to get *any more.*

I’ve seen barrel pants out in the wild, and I didn’t like what I saw! Love your tote! Speaking of Liberty of London, I just got a pair of Adidas slides with a Liberty print! I saved the shoebox paper wrapper because it was a Liberty print. Now that is something that is easy on the eyes!

LOL to the horror of barrel pants, although I do have to say that Nili Lotan Shons are strangely flattering and versatile. Speaking of NL, are you referring to her Tel Aviv pants? I own two pair, both purchased second hand, and both worn to fraying I love them so much. So I thought I'd treat myself to a brand new pair, but imagine my horror when I went on her site to discover they are no longer made. Unacceptable, they are literally the perfect chinos!
