I was sad to learn to that fashion legend Polly Mellen died this week, at the ripe old age of 100. She always seemed to me to be the most intimidating of editors, the most fashion with a capital F. Then, when she retired, she gave an interview to Women’s Wear Daily in which she mentioned that she quite liked Lucky, which had recently launched, that it seemed fresh and new to her. At that point in time, the fashion world was being extra-snotty about Lucky, so when I saw her a few weeks later at the CFDA awards, I screwed up my nerve, approached her and introduced myself, and thanked her for the kind words. She couldn’t have been more lovely. It was a small kindness, but I’ll always remember it.
