It’s based on an actual cultural literacy quiz that a couple of Vogue editors came up with to screen potential assistants. I aced it, and also, just fyi, had a pretty disastrous interview at Vogue in the 90s so who really knows.
That quiz is inspired by reporting for the just-launched book, Empire of the Elite: Inside Condé Nast, The Media Dynasty That Reshaped America, which is chock full of juicy tidbits about the rise and sad decline of my former employer.
