In 2017, I signed a contract with an editor at a good publishing house to write a memoir. It would cover my career, but focus mostly on Lucky and my time there, which was—to say the very least—a mixed bag. Like a bad Lifetime movie, in fact, with a tagline that goes something like “Her career was rocketing skyward, but her life was falling apart.” I said in pitch meetings that it would be Girl Interrupted meets The Devil Wears Prada. I don’t think I ever really wanted to write it.
After a long while—weeks and months after the book’s due date—I realized this, and returned the advance. But I did write some of that book, and since it will truly never see the light of day otherwise, I’m sharing some of it here. What follows was written a while back, and has to do with how Lucky came to be.
