My new bangs are just impossibly pleasing to me. I got them cut a couple of weeks ago, and still can’t quite process how much they soften my face. More than one person has told me I look ten years younger, and while I’m not entirely sure that is true, they have absolutely made a difference, I’m certain of that.

They’re on the longer side—they’re what are called curtain bangs, supposedly because they frame your face—and having them, especially if you’ve never had bangs before, takes some getting used to. First off, you have to not be driven crazy by the fact that your hair will be in your face 100% of the time. I have always been a person who very much does not want my hair in my face, but curtain bangs, as you can see here, are a pretty in-your-face enterprise. I’m constantly shaking my hair out of my face in a way that reminds me of early-era Justin Bieber.

The other thing that takes getting used to is the fact that you have to “train” them to hang right. You can’t really see it in this picture (and apologies for how filthy dirty my hair is in it), but the bangs on my right half all still look like they’re trying to migrate to my left half, and it takes work, every day, to make them come off like they’re supposed to.

I know that bangs are tricky, and that, at any given moment, half the people in the world who have them regret them forcefully, and are trying to grow them out as quickly as possible. The other half like their bangs so much that they become part of their personalities, and this, for better or worse, is where I’m pretty sure I’m headed.
