A number of years ago, when I was still in the habit of spending stupid amounts of money on clothing, I purchased a zipper hoodie for $500. Rather surprisingly, it turned out to be one of my wisest purchases ever.
I saw the hoodie one afternoon while browsing Net a Porter—as I was in the habit of doing back when I still spent stupid amounts of money on clothing. I was living then with my two dogs on the Lower East Side, in newish-but-somehow-still-sketchy doorman building on an otherwise pretty desolate stretch of Eldridge Street. I was writing the blog that became this newsletter.
Though the building was iffy, my actual apartment was beautiful, with floor-to-ceiling windows, multiple exposures, and views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. It felt a bit like living in a treehouse. I grew succulents, which thrived in all that sunlight. I was dating, though not very successfully. I was kind of lonely. I was buying a lot of clothes.
